Job Description:
This position is offered in Apple's Environmental Technologies department within Apple's Product Design division. Our mission is to deliver the world's leading programs on the elimination of hazardous substances, improved material and energy efficiency as well as design for disassembly and recycling. Apple's Environmental Technologies Department is an integral part of the product teams within Apple's HW Engineering division, providing input that guides product teams toward more environmentally-friendly product design. The Department performs industry-leading work in reducing the amount of toxic substances in its products, increasing the energy efficiency of its products, and lowering the carbon footprint of products and associated manufacturing processes.
In support of the effort to reduce toxic substances in products, the Environmental Technologies group seeks a chemist, chemical engineer, or materials scientist to manage compliance with environmental legislation on toxic substances and program manage industry-leading initiatives to reduce the use of toxic substances. An understanding of toxicology and exposure pathways would be a bonus. The candidate will also be directly responsible for managing environmental requirements with cross functional engineering teams during the design and development process of specific product lines. The candidate will be given global responsibility for Apple's chemical strategy and will be expected to deliver a leadership vision and execution strategy for tackling challenges relating to REACH, Green Chemistry reporting and full materials disclosure. The candidate should be familiar with the expectations and challenges of working with fast moving technology roadmaps and should have experience working with and managing engineers, consultants and support services such as IS&T.
Responsibilities include:
- Program manage implementation of a full materials disclosure program with Apple's suppliers
- Track and assess existing and emerging regulations or standards on restricted substances and green chemistry
- Establish technical solutions to regulatory restrictions as well as identify and develop advocacy strategies as needed
- Develop policies and specifications on the use of restricted substances
- Lead initiatives to eliminate the use of toxic substances from products, including communication of requirements and procedures to track verification
- Create procedures to validate components meet Apple's substance restriction specifications
- Develop processes to assess the toxicological properties of materials
- Communicate the toxicological properties of materials with product design teams, including assisting with materials selection
Skills & Experience
- Bachelor in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, environmental sciences or a related engineering field; graduate degree preferred
- Understanding of a broad range of analytical techniques to evaluate chemical composition, such as XRF, IC, AA, XRD
- Thorough knowledge of environmental regulations on restricted substances including EU RoHS, China RoHS, REACH, and EPEAT
- Experience in interpreting and implementing consumer product regulations, associated standards and guidelines
- Experience in discretionary judgement and risk management relating in qualifying designs during product development and material investigation phases
- Experience in leading interdisciplinary project teams and working cross functionally
- Demonstrated ability to track multiple projects and associated products during the development phase.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct or participate in risk analysis by providing clear summary of facts and conclusions and to identify and present alternatives to ensure a successful path forward.
- Familiarity with industry and academic experts in the fields of hazardous materials and Green Chemistry as well as working within standards groups and industry associations
- Knowledge of enterprise systems (e.g SAP, AGILE, BOM CHECK) for recording part-level materials data within systems of record would be an advantage
- Technical knowledge of system architecture, design, material composition and manufacturing processes of computers and mobile communication devices would be an advantage
- Basic knowledge of toxicology and green chemistry concepts
- Excellent project management and communication skills
- People management experience is a plus
- Strong command of written and spoken English is required; experience working with electronics suppliers an advantage
